Epic should be just below Initiative in your hierarchy. This is what ours looks like, for example. The Story level shown encompasses all issue types that are using the "Standard issue type" category in Jira. For us, that's stories, bugs, tasks, test cases, and several others. We don't have to specifically define them in the hierarchy.
You can add these issue types, but the fields required for the Epic aren't supported in the form. And the hierarchy doesn't display in the list or timeline. The hierarchy displays nicely in Advanced roadmap if you have an epic set up, but if you don't, and you just have a task with subtasks, it categorizes the work under "issues with no parent."
You should be able to use Move to change the sup-task to a Story and then edit the story and add the epic link to the desired epic. Peter Nov 26, 2020.
